Toyota’s History in Tumut
Tim & Belinda O’Malley became Directors of Tumut Toyota in September 2011, following on from Phil Barton and Col Coulton, who renamed the business as Tumut Toyota in 1992.
Toyota has been an iconic brand in Tumut since the early sixties, when Tony Manning signed a franchise contract in 1963 to sell new Toyota’s in Tumut and he also built the building we operate of today.
At the time, the business was named Manning Motors and operated successfully until 1985, when it was sold to Gary Quinn, who changed the name to Gary Quinn Motors. Gary was a vibrant character who enthusiastically sold vehicles until his passing in 1988. From here the business was purchased by Frank McGuiness and he subsequently renamed it Snowy Mountains Toyota. Frank stayed with the franchise for a couple of years until it was purchased by Brian Baldwin and John Sheridan, who ended their association in 1992.
At this time, Tumut was home to not only the Toyota Franchise, but also Ford, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Nissan & Holden and an opportunity arose for the owners of the local Ford & Mitsubishi Dealership, known as Parktown Autos to acquire the Toyota Franchise. Col Coulton became Dealer Principal, and the name Tumut Toyota was born. When it was Col’s time to retire in 2000, Tim & Belinda O’Malley became co-owners with Phil & June Barton, with Tim assuming the role as Dealer Principal.
In 2011, Tim & Belinda became sole owners of the franchise, and they proudly employ 25 local staff to help provide the outstanding service that Tumut Toyota is renowned for.
